Cosmetic Upgrades to Your Home

Cosmetic upgrades are minor renovations to your home. When I say "minor" that would mean no demo of walls, removal of ceilings, additions, foundation work, etc. An example of a cosmetic upgrade would be replacing all tile in a bathroom, or removing laminate floors and installing hardwood floors.

If you are considering doing minor renovations here are a couple things to consider before you start:

1. Determine exactly what you want to do and investigate whether or not your upgrades are going to require town permits. This varies by municipalities/cities, so do your research. You can do this by going to your city or municipal website and researching "required permits" for construction/renovation. If anything is unclear, you can call the that town or city's building department and they can answer any questions.

2. Research the materials you want to use, pricing and labor and trades-persons needed so you know the scope of your project. I recommend going on YouTube and checking out videos about the things you are considering. It will display what the work will consist of, this way you wont be surprised by anything once you get into the project.

3. Figure out the costs and build a budget so you can get your head around the total project cost. To get the dollar amounts, research the prices of the materials you are considering as well as call any contractors you need to complete the project, and have them give you a quote.

Compile this information in a notebook, review it and determine if it is something you are up for and your timing on doing it. If you do it, have a blast and remember you are investing in your home and way of life.
